On Oct 30, 1938, Orson Welles and the Mercury Theater on the Air presented a radio play of War of the Worlds, presenting a story of Martians landing inNew Jersey. According to subsequent analysis, one out of every 12 listeners panicked and took the show as reality, stocking up on weapons and heading for the hills. Was this hoax intended to insight panic, or did the boy wonder Orson Welles simply discover that he didn’t know his own power?
